Southeast broccoli sites survive Matthew deluge

Hurricane Matthew brought ten inches of rain to two of our research locations. Both Hastings, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina were in the heaviest rainfall zones.

Map of rainfall totals in southeas, showing high preciptiation in Hastings and Charleston.

With the heavy rain and a six-foot storm surge, the water had nowhere to go.

We had no experiments in the ground yet at Hastings, and the site will be ready in time.

In Charleston (below), a breeding trial was in the ground. It suffered in the wind, but will recover. Fortunately, the beds did their job, and the water was able to drain.

We don’t yet know the status of fall broccoli plantings in the region.
