Gitona

Food requirements

We grow G. americana on banana food.

Temperature

We rear these flies at 23°C.

Pupation conditions

The pupal cases will stick to the walls of glass vials so we do not paper vials.

Special requirements

We have not yet finished carrying out experiments to determine the egg to adult development time or male and female ages of reproductive maturity; however, we do know that the generation time is longer and ages of reproductive maturity older than most Drosophila species. Thus, it is necessary to mix adults of different ages when starting new vials.

In order to prevent the flies from getting stuck in the food and dying, we keep vials with adults horizontal. Once larvae start to appear and the media gets soupy we remove the adults and keep the vials upright.
