Wine tasting

Even though we have all been working very hard, we have also had the opportunity to enjoy ourselves. Last Friday’s wine tasting at a nearby restaurant was a great example of combining an experience that was both educational and entertaining. As we walked into Renato e Luisa, which had opened specifically for our group, we could not help but grow excited for the journey which awaited our taste buds.

The owner and head chef of the restaurant, Renato led the tasting, discussing the general production of wine, its various flavors, and other nuanced qualities of the drinks before we could actually try the wine. He spoke about the differences between sweet and dry wine, and showed us the correct method of storing and opening a bottle of wine. Shortly thereafter, he requested that several participants showcase their wisdom and strength in the field of wine bottle opening, emphasizing the importance of technique so that the air would not be let into the wine and therefore allowing it to taste better. After a victorious effort by one student, the student was given a wine bottle as a prize for his efforts.

Renato also created a group competition in which each table was given several scents which they had to identify correctly, with the winner also receiving a bottle of wine. Even though the struggle was intense, only one group managed to win. As they cheered each other on, Renato began to discuss the pairings of various wines with alcohol- champagne with cheese, white wine with meat, and red wine with dessert.

As he was discussing these various pairings, we were given appetizers to whet our appetites, including cheese balls covered in pine nuts, prosciutto with cheese, and freshly baked bread that rendered it extremely difficult to resist eating the food in front of us. Following appetizers, we were given a plate of authentic gnocchi to go with our white wine, and then chocolate cake as an end to our wonderful meal. With our tummies full and satisfied, we thanked Renato and left, certain that we would return once again.
