Meltdown and Spectre vulnerability

It’s all over the news – the CPU bug that affects Intel (and AMD, some ARM, etc). There are actually several vulnerabilities with different scopes and different patches are needed. Some of the issues can’t be fixed by patching the Operating System (Windows, Linux, Mac OSX). They’re actually in the browser software or the like. So look out for patches to Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.

The media is in a tizzy about the latest ransomware to hit a high profile target, in this case the UKs NHS. The Verge has one example of the coverage. With such a high profile event, CLASSE-IT is getting asked about the situation and what to do.

Computing and Internet Security

Cybersecurity has become a hot topic at Cornell recently. For instance, you may have noticed options for “Two-Step” or Dual-Factor authentication in Cornell’s central login service. There have been increased reminders about “Don’t Click That” and other internet hygiene tips. The Cornell Policy on Information Security has been recently revamped. The Research Division and CLASSE are being included in discussions with ITSO – the central IT Security Office.

Stock Computer hardware models and updates

CLASSE maintains a set of tested computing hardware and accessories. These change as time goes on and we thought it is a good time to provide a snapshot of some highlighted current offerings. As you know, CLASSE uses Lenovo for our computing and most users have Lenovo models issued to them. We usually have several stock models targeting a few main use cases. These models are for standard desktops, Inventor Workstations (and other high powered workstation uses) and Desktop Replacement Laptop models.

Lenovo is one of the industry leading PC companies worldwide.  Since Lenovo’s acquisition from IBM, the company continues to deliver top-class service and technology solutions to businesses and clients worldwide. Lenovo recently released a major update to their model lines, and CLASSE has correspondingly updated our stock offerings. Here we give a short overview of the new models.

Understanding network slowness issues

Many different network services are regularly used here at CLASSE. They include SAMBA, remote applications on WinApp, and the Compute Farm. We all connect to the CLASSE network in different ways – some people use desktops wired into the CLASSE network, others use Cornell’s EduRoam/RedRover service, and some access CLASSE from their home. Performance of network services varies with the type of service, the type of computer used to access the service, and the network connections between the two. Remember that when you’re on wireless in Wilson, Newman, and the PSB, you are using a non-CLASSE network, even though you’re in a CLASSE building. [Read more…]
