Moving to Ithaca

The days are ticking down to the start of the 2013-2014 school year! We are so excited to welcome CIPA’s class of 2015 in just a few weeks’ time. For those of you who have never been to Ithaca – or who have spent little time here – we thought we’d offer up a few helpful hints to hopefully ease your transition to life in beautiful upstate New York.

Dump and Run Sale

Cornell will hold its 11th annual “Dump and Run” sale on August 24 and 25 in Helen Newman Hall. At the end of each school year, students can donate reusable items to be sold in August to benefit local charities and keep materials out of landfills. Each year, students can purchase clothing and jewelry, lamps, TVs, kitchenware, furniture, and much more for great prices. Plan on checking out the sale to pick up any items you may need to complete your new living space.

School and Home Supplies

If you can’t find what you’re looking for at the Dump and Run sale, there are other local retailers that can help you outfit your new home if needed. The Ithaca Mall – accessible directly from campus on the 30 bus – contains a Target, a Best Buy, various clothing and shoe stores, and a movie theater (to relax after a successful outing!).

What’s For Dinner?

You will also have a few options for stocking your fridge. The downtown Wegman’s is a huge store that’s very popular with much of the Ithaca population. There are also two Tops stores (one near Wegman’s and one north of town by the mall) and a Green Star Natural Foods Market at your disposal. For the ultimate in fresh produce, check out the Ithaca Farmers’ Market each weekend throughout late summer and autumn.

We hope everyone is getting excited to get settled and kick off the school year! As always, you can contact cipa@cornell.edu with any questions. Orientation begins on August 26, and we look forward to meeting all of you then!
