More on the presentation:
It is often that correlation between cause and it’s intended effect is made popular as being its cause. Causality and correlation are distinct and necessary, but not sufficient. The use of counterfactual design in experiments is only now getting eminence in the field of civil engineering – especially so in road construction. Counterfactual design, when implemented correctly can help reduce biases and provide a way forward to measure causality. Most government, especially those in developing countries have, in the past decade made allocations worth millions of dollars in road construction in their rural areas with the intention that road connection and access to transport medium leads to a reduction of poverty, increase in education and other socially desirable parameters. Federal governments, and international credit and leaning institutions have studied the impact of such studies and made their conclusions – unless supplemented by secondary infrastructure, like access to markets, road development schemes seldom have any impact. This study reviews eight such impact evaluation studies to find flaws in such studies – both design and data – which distort the story of their effects and tries to present a reality check.
See you there!

More on the presentation:
Every day, we use organic compounds to keep ourselves healthy, clean, and well-fed, as well as for myriad other purposes.  Increasingly, organic compounds- including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products- are being detected in water bodies all over the world, raising concerns about human and ecosystem health impacts.  We previously conducted a study in partnership with the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Plant and the USGS that found many organic compounds in Cayuga Lake, Six Mile Creek, and Fall Creek, all three of which are used as drinking water sources for the Ithaca area.
In an effort to further understand organic contaminants in drinking water around Ithaca, I collected four tap water samples from around Ithaca, as well as a sample of Aquafina bottled water.  The samples were all concentrated using solid phase extraction and measured using liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry.  A calibration curve with 119 organic compounds was used to quantify compounds found in the samples.
Of the 119 compounds, 24 were detected at least once.  The artificial sweetener sucralose (the main ingredient in Splenda) and caffeine were among the most frequently detected compounds in the tap and bottled water samples.  The other 22 detected compounds included antidepressants, antibiotics, herbicides, and industrial compounds.

11/19/15 – Holiday Food Drive

Please join us this holiday season to give back and care for our community. We are partnering with a great local organization, Friendship Donation Network (FDN at http://friendshipdonations.org/), to make sure the donated foods go directly to the best food pantries in the area to serve those in need.
Cans/nonperishable food items will be collected Nov 2nd-20th in the following locations: (1) First Floor Lobby, (2) Main Office, Hollister 220, (3) Undergraduate Lounge, Hollister 202, (4) Mogami Lab, Hollister 266, and (5) Graduate Lounge, Hollister 351.
To make the food drive even more fun, the GSA will be having a friendly competition with ASCE and EERI to see who can bring in the most food items: all items put in our box in the graduate lounge will count towards our tally. The Undergraduate Lounge box will count towards ASCE, and the Mogami Lab box will go towards EERI.
The winning team (the team with the most cans from 11/2 through 11/13) gets free admission to the Food Drive Social (Nov 19th) and gets to choose the food that will be catered at the social. All others who wish to join the social can enter with the simple “fee” of one non-perishable food item collected at the door – everyone wins!
Items are still acceptable though the 20th, but after the 13th they will no longer go towards the competition. Items placed in the main office or the first floor lobby also do not go towards the competition.
See below for some guidelines for the types of food FDN is looking for, but please try to bring in anything that you CAN.
Please contact Yolanda (ycl4@cornell.edu) with any questions.
— CEE GSA
Not sure what to bring?
FDN can use any non-perishable food item, but there are some loose guidelines because FDN strives to provide healthy foods to their programs (preferably low in sugar, artificial sweeteners and white flour). Preferred items include:

– whole grain cereals
– raisins and other dried fruit
– nuts and nut butters
– whole wheat pasta
– crackers
– canned fruits
– canned vegetables

This incident, which made headlines in 2012 (http://nyti.ms/1BjqsZ8), had far reaching consequences that should be of interest to all scientists and engineers, regardless of their discipline. Dr. Jordan’s talk will examine the role of engineers and scientists in society and explore to what degree professional engineers and scientists should be held responsible for designs, statements and predictions.
This seminar will be held on Wednesday, November 11th from 12:45-2:00 PM in the Hollister Graduate Lounge. Lunch will be provided.
The presentation will open up to a broader discussion about the role of engineers in society at the conclusion of the talk.

What that girl who you always pass in the hallway’s name is? Do you like free pizza? If you answered yes to any of these questions then come on down to the Graduate Student Seminar (GraSS) series, which will be held monthly by your GSA.
The semester’s first speaker is GSA’s own Justyna Kosianka, who will be presenting her work on Fluid Structure Interaction software (abstract below).
The first GraSS will be held on Monday, October 19th in the grad lounge at 4:30 PM. We will have FREE PIZZA and beverages, so come hang out with fellow grad students and learn about Justyna’s interesting work.
If you are interested in participating as a future speaker for the GraSS series, please contact GSA Seminar Chair David Gold (dfg42).
