Hidden Valley 4-H Camp S’mores and More Challenge

S'moreCampers who have been to Hidden Valley 4-H Camp and choose Campfire Cooking as an activity have all participated in the creation of S’mores as part of the traditions at camp. There is something magical that happens when kids, and even adults are around campfires and the word s’more is said; the melted chocolate, perfectly cooked marshmallow and of course the graham cracker crust that holds the yearly summer treats together. If you have sat around a campfire with kids roasting marshmallows you know there are many different strategies to toasting the perfect marshmallow with some campers preferring an almost uncooked marshmallow to many preferring the overdone, charred variety. There are also many different types of s’mores – some people prefer to use vanilla wafers, add smore peanut butter and a toasted marshmallow. S’mores are not just for campfires either, in the case of rainy weather you can make tasty s’mores in your oven or microwave – this is where imagination, creativity and recipes found online really help.
This summer season we are taking the s’more creating during campfire cooking at Hidden Valley 4-H Camp to all our campers virtually in our 1st ever Hidden Valley 4-H S’more Challenge. We invite our camp families to participate in our challenge by sending us your family’s recipe for S’mores and a photo of your creation. They can be made indoors or outdoors and we ask that you follow the same rules that we have at camp which means leave the fire starting and watching to an adult and don’t forget fires are only made outside in designated fire rings. Please send your entry to our Camp Registrar, Dayna Karius at dk576@cornell.edu by July 25. You might be wondering what we are going to do with S’mores recipes and photos. We will post each entry to our Social Media page with a thank you, and we also will choose one finalist based on a combination of traditional and unique ingredients as our S’more Campfire Camper or Camp Family and your recipe will be featured in 2021 at Hidden Valley during campfire cooking.
