Northern New York 1st Cut Alfalfa-Grass Quality Report – 6/2/2014

From Kitty O’Neil, Regional Field Crops and Soils Specialist in the North Country, NY.

Here in the north, much of the grass hay is now fully headed and beyond optimal quality – particularly orchardgrass, bluegrass and timothy. Reed canarygrass is generally at flag leaf/boot stage but will be headed in a warm day or two.  Alfalfa, however, is just approaching optimal quality.  I saw no alfalfa or clover blossoms in any of the fields monitored this week.

I was happy to see some hay down yesterday, but it’s the tip of the first-cutting iceberg up here.
