  •  Tuesday, October 2, 2012 Livestock Gross Margin for Dairy (LGM-Dairy) Crop Insurance Intermediate Training Opportunity….Is LGM-Dairy Right for You?  11 am-11:50 am, for part one;  12 noon to 1 pm for part two   Webinar training scheduled with expert Dr. Brian Gould, Univ. of Wisconsin.  The presentation will assume some knowledge of this margin protection crop insurance program, with the first hour providing a sophisticated overview of the crop insurance program.  (For those who wish for an introduction or an introductory refresher, log into NYSDAM’s website to watch and listen to the intro webinar by Dr. Gould at www.agriculture.ny.gov/AP/CropInsuranceSpecialty.html and scroll down to Dairy.)

At 12 noon, in the second half of the training, NYS dairy producer data will be used to demonstrate the online tool that helps farmers and their crop insurance agents decide on the insurance contract to purchase.  The University of Wisconsin’s analyzer is available at any time on their website at: http://future.aae.wisc.edu/lgm_analyzer/.   Dairy producer questions will be answered throughout.

Livestock Gross Margin for Dairy (LGM-Dairy) is a crop insurance program that is based on milk income over feed costs, which the program calls a “gross margin”. The insurance program covers the difference between the expected gross margin (insurance guarantee) and the actual gross margin for the months the producer selects for coverage, based on the amount of milk the producer chooses to insure and feed declared.  Enrollment is limited to one contract per month (subject to funding) and occurs after markets close on the last business Friday of that month.  The next expected enrollment opportunity for LGM-Dairy is Friday, October 26.  Program funding is limited by the program’s pilot status in the current Farm Bill and assigned funding was exhausted in the first hour of the October and November sales enrollment opportunities last year.  Remaining funding was used in an August enrollment.

  • October 4th, 2012 The Dairy Environmental Systems group in PRO DAIRY is holding a workshop titled “Biogas Clean-up and Utilization Systems” at Dutch Hollow Country Club, Skaneateles, NY and Twin Birch Farms, 1839 Benson Rd, Owasco, NY 13021.   • Sunday, October 7th Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will be hosting an open discussion on all things poultry at the Schaghticoke Fair grounds. The discussion will be held from 10am-11am in the show arena during the tailgate sale. Local poultry breeders, experts, and judges will be on hand to discuss topics related to how birds are judged, how to choose a bird for show, what to look for when buying, and much more. The class is free and open to the public, younger people and 4-H members are encouraged to attend. Adults, as well as young poultry enthusiasts will get a better understanding of how to choose birds that meet their needs.

This 4-unit, intensive hands-on training program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills students require to enter employment in the meat processing industry. Students will be skilled in sanitation, food safety, slaughter, meat cutting and processing. As part of the students’ preparation for the industry, the program consists of specialized training in the accuracy of cutting, knife handling, portion control, merchandising and the utilization of all products. Hands-on training in meat animal slaughter, primal fabrication, retail cutting, value-added products (sausage), wrapping and storage of finished product. Safety, sanitation including USDA HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point), customer relations from custom cutting to product pick up and invoicing will be part of this program.

There is a terrific lineup of informed and informative, experienced practitioner/speakers:

  • Steve Kenyon, a Holistic Management Educator/practitioner from Saskatchewan, Canada.  Steve will discuss, in two separate sessions, the business and the practice of custom grazing cattle for profit.  Additionally, Steve will touch upon Winter Management techniques that will have direct application to those of us in the cold Northeast.
  • Jerry Brunetti, one of the original organizers of the PASA conference and founder of Agri-Dynamics, a dairy nutritionist and an expert in human nutrition too, is going to discuss these two intimately related topics of animal and human health.  If we are what we eat, then we are what our animals eat.
  • Jeremy Engh owns and runs Lakota Ranch in Virginia as well as running the Lakota Bull Test, an all-forage/grazing test for beef breed bulls.  While Jeremy is a Red Devon breeder and grass-finisher, the Lakota Bull Test accepts bulls from all beef breeds and measures their performance in contemporary groups, while also conducting Breeding Soundness Exams and other pertinent pre-breeding season data collection.  All this data is then provided to the bull owner/consignors and to the prospective customers of the Lakota Bull Test Sale.
  • Paul and Phyllis Van Amburgh, who own and operate Dharma Lea Farm in Sharon Springs, NY will discuss their approach to animal production on their Certified Organic, 100% grass-fed farm where they produce grass-fed beef along side their year round grass-fed dairy.
  • Dr. tatiana Stanton, NY State’s Small Ruminant Specialist will talk about her initial research into applied pasture lambing and how the results compare to jug lambing.  tatiana will talk about these and other matters relating specifically to the pasture rearing and finishing of goats and sheep.

  • UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture is Hiring – The UVM Center for Sustainable Agriculture invites applications for our new Farming and Climate Change Coordinator position. The Coordinator will provide leadership for the Center’s new Climate Change program by developing, implementing and evaluating programmatic efforts.  This will require engaging in outreach and applied research with Vermont farmers to support their efforts to implement relevant practices (both adaptation and mitigation) related to climate change, with a particular emphasis on farming in the floodplains; and 2)working in collaboration with other agencies, organizations, and UVM departments. Demonstrated skills in program development and design, program implementation and evaluation, collaboration, applied research, grant writing and leadership desired.

Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, networking skills, ability to travel in the region, experience working with all types of farms including fruit, vegetable, livestock and crop farms, in-depth knowledge of sustainable agriculture issues relevant to small diversified farms, and ability to work and understand the multi-faceted nature of farming from economic, social and environmental perspectives. Desirable candidates will have a minimum of Master’s degree in Plant and Soil Sciences, Agroecology, Community Development and Applied Economics, Horticulture, Natural Resources, environmental sciences or related field and 3-5 years of relevant experience. Must be familiar with climate change issues affecting Northeast farming systems. Should be aware of other programmatic efforts to reach farmers in the state. Applications from women and people of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged.   • USDA Announces Hispanic and Women Farmer and Rancher Claims Period Now Open – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who allege discrimination by the USDA in past decades can file claims between September 24, 2012 and March 25, 2013.

The process offers a voluntary alternative to litigation for each Hispanic or female farmer and rancher who can prove that USDA denied their applications for loan or loan servicing assistance for discriminatory reasons for certain time periods between 1981 and 2000.

As announced in February 2011, the voluntary claims process will make available at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers. There are no filing fees to participate in the program.

The Department will continue reaching out to potential Hispanic and female claimants, around the country to get the word out to individuals who may be eligible for this program so they have the opportunity to participate.

Claimants must register for a claims package (by calling the number or visiting the website) and the claims package will be mailed to claimants. Claims Period: September 24, 2012 – March 25, 2013.  Independent legal services companies will administer the claims process and adjudicate the claims. Although there are no filing fees to participate and a lawyer is not required to participate in the claims process, persons seeking legal advice may contact a lawyer or other legal services provider.
