“Farming in the Basin” meeting

Our first “Farming in the Basin” meeting was recently held at the Dimock Farm in Peru. A nice crowd of farmers and other interested folks attended and learned about Winter Rye as a cover crop and spring forage. Thanks to the Dimocks, Lake Champlain Basin Program, NRCS and the Clinton County Soil & Water District for your support and participation.

Learn how cereal rye can supplement a spring forage shortage

At Dimock Farms in Peru, NY

  •  Dimock Farms has been a long-time participant in conservation programs, the Dimocks’ have implemented many best management practices to reduce nutrient, toxin and pathogen runoff to Lake Champlain.  They currently utilize winter rye as both a cover crop and spring forage crop on about 50 acres of crop land.
  • Myra Lawyer, Agronomist from the LCBP will talk about how the Basin program hopes to assist farmers make informed decisions about conservation measures.
  • NRCS and Soil & Water personnel will help explain the programs now available to cost share conservation measures.
  • Updates on the SWCD’s new No-till Drill, Aerial Seeding of Winter Rye and the coming       arrival of the new Cornell Cooperative Extension Field Crops Specialist.

We have multiple speakers and will cover topics of interest to all types of livestock producers.  Keynote Speaker will be Jenn Colby, Pasture Program Coordinator of UVM’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture.

Achievement/Family Fun Night Registration is now available online

In honor of all of the success and hard-work our 4-H club members have done this year we are hosting our annual Achievement day in a fun and exciting way! Family fun night will be at the Comfort Inn in Plattsburgh on Friday, February 22nd, 2013 from 6PM-8PM. All youth will be provided with a few tokens for the arcade, be able to enjoy time in the newly renovated pool area and food and beverages will be provided. Come out and celebrate all of our 4-Her’s dedication and achievements with us!

Clinton County Public Presentations Registration is Online

It’s that time of the year again, County Public Presentations are approaching quickly! This year Public Presentations will be held at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh on March 2nd and presentations are scheduled to begin at 9:30AM so arrive early for set up and preperation.

2013 Pesticide Applicator Training

Cornell Cooperative Extension is holding a series of classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in February that will fulfill various Commercial Pesticide Applicator requirements.

Those already certified to apply pesticides in New York can attend any of these sessions for recertification credits.  Each day is broken into two 3-hour sessions, from 9:00-noon and 12:30-3:30. The cost is $30 per session for commercial applicators and $15 per session for private applicators. Most of the sessions will be held at the Plattsburgh Cornell Cooperative Extension office, except for February 5 and 19th which will be held at their Westport office.

The 30 hour qualifying course for those not yet certified in commercial categories costs $275 plus any required books. Private applicators are not required to take the 30 hour course if they have had prior experience. This year the 30 hour commercial course will be in categories 3a(ornamentals and turf), 7a(structural pests) and 7g(cooling towers).

As a follow-up to last year’s program on social media marketing for your business, we are offering 2 in-depth classes. Both at our office in Plattsburgh. We’re keeping the classes small to allow plenty of one-on-one time, so please register early!

This hands-on class is meant for beginners.  Instructor Bernadette Logozar will walk you through setting up a Facebook account, page and establishing a presence for your business using Facebook; this is a working session.  You will need to bring your own laptop in order to participate fully.  You do not need to be familiar with Facebook or social media in order to take the class.  Basic computer skills are a must!  Light refreshments provided.  Cost:  $20/person or farm; class size limited to 12 so register early.  Call 518-561-7450 or email Amy Ivy at adi2@cornell.edu
