Chickens for Beginners

If you have been thinking about adding some more living color to your yard and garden,  Spring is the ideal time to think about chickens. With the growing interest in eating local foods, what is more local than harvesting eggs from your own chickens. For a small family, 3 to 4 chickens can furnish plenty of eggs. Housing can be kept relatively simple, feeding and watering equipment is widely available and chickens can be purchased as chicks or even as adult hens ready to lay.

If you are interested in raising chickens for pleasure or profit, eggs or meat, Cooperative Extension will be holding a workshop on Monday March 25th from 7 pm to 830 pm here at the Extension office in Plattsburgh.  We will cover the basics of chicken husbandry, housing, nutrition, and related topics.

The workshop has a $5.00 registration fee. Contact Peter Hagar, Agriculture Educator at 561-7450 or phh7@cornell.edu

Steve Reiners, Horticulture Professor, and I will be leading an informal grower discussion focusing on vegetable production, especially fertility and irrigation, but other questions are welcome as well. This will be a follow-up on last February’s  visit from Steve, so we hope those of  you who came then will come again, and those of you who couldn’t join us, will be able to this time.

Please do let me know if you’re coming to that one so we can be sure to have enough food, too.

See the attached flier for details.  12-18-12 flier – Keeseville

Attention High Tunnel Growers

Join us on December 3rd at the at the Cornell Research Farm and Farmhouse in Willsboro from 10 til noon.

Mike Davis (farm manager at Cornell’s Research Farm in Willsboro) and Amy Ivy will be leading an informal grower discussion focusing on various types of tunnels and cool season crops.

We’ll take a look at the variety of late fall crops Mike has growing in the high tunnel there, then move indoors for a grower discussion and snacks.

We especially encourage newer growers to come and get some ideas and ask questions – we all have plenty to learn from each other! But all growers are more than welcome, of course, and we hope some of the more experienced folks will come to give us some perspective.

Please do let me know if you’re coming so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone.

See the attached flier for details.    flier for 12-3-12 Willsboro Farm visit
