Peer Advisor Spotlight: Resources for Soon-To-Be Alumni

By Kae-Lynn Wilson, CALS Senior majoring in Animal Science

Hey seniors, are you ready?  We only have 23 days left as undergraduates. We’re almost free from all those prelims, papers, and finals! Well, I mean, unless you plan on going to grad school…or med school… or vet school (congratulations, by the way!)… or wherever it is that you’re going that still requires exams and papers.

For those of you who are like me and don’t immediately plan on more schooling, what would you like to do next? Are you going to take a year off and just relax? Are you going to travel? Do you have a job all set and ready for you? Oh yes, that dreaded 3-letter word:  Job.  Don’t panic! You’ve got time; and we are still here for you. We will not throw you out into the ocean of life without giving you a few floaties first.

The CALS Career Services Office has 6 main categories to help new alumni, which can be found here. From our Alumni Career Link, resume critiques, and job search appointments, the career services team can help you in person, over the phone, or online. If you plan on staying local for a little while, be sure to check out our career libraries or stop by our office to make an appointment with a career advisor.  You can get job search materials both in person or online, and be sure to check out the job postings on CCNet or Experience! The Career Services team will do their best to help plan your next step.  Call us anytime at 607.255.2257.

Take a deep breath. We’re almost there. And we’re going to do great things.

Gardening and Archival Opportunity

May 2nd, 2013 · No Comments · Look Who’s Hiring

Interested in collecting and organizing Kodachrome slides of the operation of my flower shop?  I’ve kept picture records of all the installations throughout the country, from California to Maine to Texas and many states in between. We have been asked to document these great events in a book that illustrates how we have designed and constructed these parties. The person interested would have an opportunity to enjoy the country life on a farm that has formal European style gardens with greenhouses, horses, barn and pasture. We have a hillside dedicated to botanical plants. For a diversion  from the rigors of the collection of slides, you might help with gardening. It would be to your advantage to have a car because we are out in the country and you will need to find housing approx. 30 minutes from my house (several colleges nearby). But rest assured there are restaurants, bars and shopping within a few miles.  There is also a very nice library attached to the house that has hundreds of gardening books available to you.  The selected candidate will be paid $3,000.00 for the time spent here.   If interested, please send a resume to Jo-Lynn Buchanan, Jb44@cornell.edu.  She will then forward them to the alumnus, Don Vanderbrook.  The location of the internship is Claystone Farm, Newberry, Ohio.

Peer Advisor Spotlight: Postgraduate Survey and Report

April 30th, 2013 · No Comments · Peer Advisor Spotlight

Peer Advisor Spotlight: Postgraduate Survey and Report

by Katelyn Walley, CALS senior majoring in Animal Science

The end of the semester is almost here! Undergrads are busy filling out financial aid forms, scheduling classes for next year, and finalizing internship plans. Those lucky seniors are entering the job market or looking forward to more classes in graduate school, studying for that last final, and attending all of their last semester gym class meetings. Be sure to stop in our office at 140 Roberts Hall before you leave Ithaca for the summer if you are still looking for summer employment, internship opportunities, or full time positions. We would be happy to help!

Our office is busy wrapping up the 2012 Postgraduate Survey and the results will be posted soon. This comprehensive Postgraduate Survey is completed by graduating seniors regarding their post graduation plans. If you are graduating (or maybe already have) in 2013 (January, May, or August), it is important to remember to complete your 2013 Postgraduate Survey. For undergrads, this can be a useful tool for future use.

All personal information is kept confidential and the survey results are used for reporting purposes only. The survey results capture important criteria such as job title and employer, geographical location, salary, how the job was found, and much more. It also takes into account graduate school and the degree seeking, and job industry sectors. The survey results provide overall CALS information and are also separated by major.

On our website, we have reports for the past four years, and are used by a variety of constituents within and outside of Cornell. Current students use them as a career tool, prospective students and parents us them to see how Cornell graduates are faring in the employment and graduate school sectors, alumni use it to keep informed, and employers use them as a recruiting tool. As a senior, they can be used to “benchmark” yourself against you peers to evaluate your professional decisions.

I encourage you to take a look at current and past year surveys – there is a whole heap of interesting information available, and can be utilized at any stage of your Cornell career and beyond!
