CEIC Data – Discover an economic data treasure

What is CEIC Data?
It is one of the most comprehensive macro-economic data sources for Asia and many emerging markets.  A product of ISI Securities,  CEIC Data provides easy access and downloading capability for over 919,457 time series for 60 + countries.

How can you access it?
You can search for CEIC Data in the library catalog at http://catalog.library.cornell.edu and click on the electronic link in the catalog record.

It is also directly accessible through this direct connect link.  You may be prompted for your Cornell netid and password.

How difficult is it to use?
It is very easy because “what you see is what you get.”  You can check off  big sets of data series and download hundreds of series at a time.

The program does open in a popup window, so you might have to enable popups for the site.

What kind of data needs can it address?
CEIC Data is useful for any kind of macro-economic data analysis.  As a reference librarian, I have answered questions such as where can I find historical inflation data for China or where can I find exports from Australia to the United States since 1985?  If you are looking for such data that might fall into the category of foreign trade, capital accounts, foreign exchange or any other macro-economic data for over 60 countries, you should check CEIC Data before any other source.

It is helpful not only to students but is highly recommended by faculty in the department of Applied Economics & Management who utilize this resource to teach graduate and undergraduate students about macro economic data.  For instance, Dr. Eswar Prasad (AEM faculty) uses this data extensively in his popular class, AEM 4540: China & India Growth Miracles.   He regularly makes presentation to world economic agencies and the United States Congress.   He relies heavily on this data to bolster his recommendations and research.

Data Stream: Latest Addition at Mann

Thomson Datastream Advance is the latest addition to Mann Library’s business resource center.  Using this dedicated terminal, you can access over 100 million data series for nearly two million instruments , including commodities, fixed income securities, equities and futures.   Initially, when you open the program,  it can be a little confusing as to what you need to do but you have to download just one series and it is quite simple from then onwards.  Here are a few tips:

  • After you launch the program, you can just search for a variable in the search box. But it makes more sense to use specific data categories (e..g, equities, bonds & convertibles, unit trusts, etc) listed on the left hand side of the screen
  • Hold the click on the mouse to see the explore or search options on the data category of your choice
  •  Use the search options on the subsequent screen
  • Once you run the search, you will return to the main screen.  You will need to click the “Run Now” button to actually see the data
  • Then select the option for”data analysis” on the left hand side of the screen such as charts, reports or the historical time series data
  • Once you find the data series you would like to download, just click on the excel spreadsheet icon.  The program interfaces with excel and data can be downloaded with a few clicks into excel.
  • A handy and easy to use guide is also available right next to the Datastream machine

So, are you wondering if you can get the data you need for your thesis, dissertation or project? You may not have to give up the idea.  Don’t pay on the web for those historical series either.  First, check with your library. If you have any questions,  don’t hesitate to contact your business librarian, Baseema Banoo Krkoska.

Unlock the Vault of Career Information

One of the more practical and hugely popular resources amongst business students are the Vault Guides to Careers.  The Cornell Career Office and the Johnson School of Management have expanded access to Vault On-line Library to the entire campus.  No matter, where you are in the world, as a Cornell student, faculty or staff, you can access this resource easily through the Cornell Library Catalog.  Just search for Vault Career Guides in the library catalog.

Vault offers a host of valuable career preparation tools you can use at many different stages of your interview preparation.  Choose among more than 20 career guides covering diverse topics such as starting your own business or working in the retail industry. A highly popular section of the resource is the Career Advice resource that provides more than 1,100 articles divided into 45 categories.  This section gives you the type of advice that you would receive from a friendly alumni or a current employee.

Apparently these career guides are considered to be worth their weight in gold.  The company has made it a little complicated to download Vault Career Guides.  I figured it out and here is the easiest way:

1.  Google the terms  Adobe Digital Editions, which is an e-book reader needed to download and read the guides

2.   On the website, download Adobe Digital Editions.  It is advised that you register the computer you typically use

3.  AFTER you have downloaded Adobe Digital Editions, you will see its icon on your computer desktop

4.   Return to the Vault website through the library catalog directly

5.   Click on the top link “Download Guides”

6.  Choose a guide and click on the download link

Then it should finally work.  If you face any technical difficulties, report the problem to the Library.  It will be a service to the community using the resource.

World Catalog – Search Cornell and Beyond

Not very long ago, the library asked faculty and students – “what do you expect from the library catalog” or something close to that. Amongst many things, Cornell users wanted it to be a single search box (with ability to conduct advanced searches) and also to be able to search beyond Cornell. No longer do users wish to only find what Cornell owns. Users want to be able to search beyond the confines of the Cornell Library. So, here it is. A new tool called WorldCat local. Try this tool from the Cornell University Library Labs page and tell us what you think. It is a single search box that will allow you to search libraries all over the world that make their records available. Worldcat’s main features are:

  • Combines searches for materials at Cornell and libraries worldwide
  • Search for books, journals, videos, documents and more as well as articles from four databases
  • Locate print material in Cornell Libraries, link directly to online resources and easily request materials not held at Cornell
