The Writing Walk-in Service (WWIS) opened a new outpost in room 160 Mann Library. The WWIS is a free service available to everyone on campus for nearly any kind of writing project: applications, presentations, lab reports, essays, papers, and more. Tutors (trained undergraduate and graduate students) can help address questions about the writing process or give assistance with particular writing assignments.

Mann is one of six WWIS locations on campus, including Olin and Uris Libraries, as well as Robert Purcell, Carol Tatkon and Rockefeller Hall. According to WWIS Director Tracy Carrick, “Olin has been a longtime fixture and has always been our busiest location, particularly for non first-year students”. Since many students come to the library to work on written assignments or get research help at the reference desk, having the WWIS in the same building makes it easy for students to get writing help at the same time. This semester the WWIS hopes to be even more convenient to students, faculty and staff working on the Ag quad with their new office in Mann rm 160 open on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-10pm. “Student study in a library, and our mission is to not be a writing center in the traditional sense, but rather to move out of our comfort center to go where students are, in order to support them as best we can,” says Carrick.

Hours, locations and more details about the Walk-in Writing Service is available on their website.

As of October 1st, Bloomberg has rolled out a new shorter and updated training program that allows Cornell University Library users to quickly learn the most essential functions of Bloomberg. This new training program will fully replace the old certification program on November 1st, 2009. If you were in the middle of the old training program, you are advised to finish it before November 1st.

Here are the details of the new Bloomberg Essential Program (BESS)

Sign up to use the machine located at Mann Library. The sign up sheet is next to the machine.

Create your own personal login: You need your personal account to ensure you receive credit. To create your own account, at the login screen, hit <GO> and follow the on-screen instructions. Use your own personal login to complete the training program.

Type the words Bloomberg Essentials or BESS <GO>. Bloomberg permits all academic users to gain essential training on-line and there is no fee for this training program.

A total of 8 modules are available through the BESS menu.

Core Videos consist of Getting Started, Bloomberg News, Market Monitors & Launchpad and API (Excel)

Market Sector Videos consist of introduction to Equity, Fixed Income, FX and Commodity

You can test your knowledge by taking the core exam (covers all 4 videos) along with any of the market sector exams

You need to complete with a 75% grade or better to earn the Acknowledgement of Completion

Re-takes of tests are not provided, so you get only one chance to pass the test.

The certification can be completed at your own pace. You would watch video tutorials and practice as much as needed.

You are strongly encouraged to take the time you need to explore the system and practice before taking the test.

When you are ready, just click on Exams Enablement and contact the Help Desk. You can also hit the green help key twice to access a Bloomberg representative.

You should budget for at least 6-8 hours to complete the entire essentials program.

Did you know that finance students can find financial markets data and acquire valuable workplace skills right here at Mann Library? For today’s business student on the job market, information skills are no longer a nicety but a necessity. That’s why early mornings or late evenings at Mann, you will find students at the Bloomberg terminal, taking on-line exams to become Bloomberg certified.

A leading financial information system, Bloomberg is used by thousands of investment professionals in their daily work life. Here at Cornell, seventeen students of AEM 4620 (Technology & Financial Markets) earned their certification last year using the Bloomberg machine at Mann Library. Students looking for historical commodity, fixed income, equities or macro-economic data need not look further than Thomson Datastream Advance, the latest addition to the Mann Library’s business resource center. Using this dedicated terminal, you can access over 100 million data series for nearly two million instruments, including commodities, fixed income securities, equities and futures.

Accounting students should recognize the name Ernst & Young (E&Y) as soon as they hear it. Ernst & Young– a leader in assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services–has made a generous gift of exclusive access to their accounting library, which will be available soon in Mann’s business resource cluster. Just as Bloomberg is the bread and butter for investment professionals, Ernst & Young online is the primary source of information for E&Y employees and their clients.

All these resources in the business cluster are tools that provide a competitive edge to businesses, and thanks to the generous support of alumni, we are able to provide them at Mann. But you will need to come to the library to use them–as much as we would love to provide unlimited access, we have to abide by the contractual arrangements of these resources and thus cannot provide unlimited access through the web.

Our alumni are sending a message to CALS and CHE business students: learn these tools so that you are better prepared for your careers. You have the opportunity to get familiar with these tools while in college, so why wait? Visit the business resources cluster to learn more or contact the business librarian, Baseema Krkoska at bb75@cornell.edu
