Bloomberg’s New Essentials Training Program

As of October 1st,  Bloomberg has rolled out a new shorter and updated training program that allows Cornell University Library users to quickly learn the most essential functions of Bloomberg.  This new training program will fully replace the old certification program on November 1st, 2009.  If you were in the middle of the old training program, you are advised to finish it before November 1st.

Here are the details of the new Bloomberg Essential Program (BESS)

Sign up to use the machine located at Mann Library.  The sign up sheet is next to the machine.

Create your own personal login:  You need your personal account to ensure you receive credit. To create your own account, at the login screen, hit <GO> and follow the on-screen instructions. Use your own personal login to complete the training program.

Type the words Bloomberg Essentials or BESS <GO>. Bloomberg permits all academic users to gain essential training on-line and there is no fee for this training program.

A total of 8 modules are available through the BESS menu.

Core Videos consist of Getting Started, Bloomberg News, Market Monitors & Launchpad and API (Excel)

Market Sector Videos consist of introduction to Equity, Fixed Income, FX and Commodity

You can test your knowledge by taking the core exam (covers all 4 videos) along with any of the market sector exams

You need to complete with a 75% grade or better to earn the Acknowledgement of Completion

Re-takes of tests are not provided, so you get only one chance to pass the test.

The certification can be completed at your own pace. You would watch video tutorials and practice as much as needed.

You are strongly encouraged to take the time you need to explore the system and practice before taking the test.

When you are ready, just click on Exams Enablement and contact the Help Desk.  You can also hit the green help key twice to access a Bloomberg representative.

You should budget for at least 6-8 hours to complete the entire essentials program.

When you are ready to take the test, hit the HELP key TWICE to chat with a Bloomberg representative. Ask the representative to provide you the test. The test will be made available through the Certification menu under “Exams.”
