Beef Stocker Production and Financial Analysis Presentation

January 22nd, 2019 6:00-8:00 pm via Zoom conference

There has been a renewed interest in promoting stocker cattle operations in the Northeast. Long the land of dairy and cow calf operations, stocker cattle may represent a viable option for those who grow cattle seasonally or do not have the resources to enter the seed stock business. New York appears to be well suited to establish seasonal stocker operations due to availability of excellent forage and grazing land.

To support this interest, especially in the Southern Tier, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets funded a project to provide education in this enterprise.

This presentation will outline the procedural and financial outcomes of Jason Detzel’s first year raising stocker cattle. Like any new operation, it takes perseverance and patience to stabilize and grow the business into a viable entity. This presentation will highlight the successes and the mistakes of his first year running stocker cattle. He will review methods including grazing routine, water system, conditioning and veterinary concerns, and transportation as well as a marketing program including the individual profit to loss ratios, FSA loan and custom work fees, and the realities of finding buyers for feeder cattle from New York.
