Delaware County Beef Producers Meeting – Dec 12

Monday, December 12 6:00pm – 8:30pm
CCE-Delaware Hamden Office, 34570 State Hwy 10, Hamden, NY  13782

2016 was a year of dramatic change in the beef industry.  Prices have fallen from record highs, requiring beef producers to adapt their management in order to stay profitable.  This meeting will help beef farmers develop strategies to remain resilient during these fluctuations in the market.  Registration opens at 5:30 and a beef dinner will be served at 6pm.  The program starts at 6:30 and will cover the following topics:

Forage Inventory and Allocation
Feeds are normally the largest cost on a beef farm.  CCE-Delaware Livestock Educator Rich Toebe will review how to complete a forage inventory and then how to allocate it to the herd over the coming winter to maximize its nutritional value and economic value.

Feeding Corn Silage to Beef
Corn silage is a high energy feed that is commonly available in Delaware County.  Cornell Beef Specialist, Dr. Mike Baker will explain how best to use it and identify what to watch out for when feeding it to beef.  He will also share innovative ways some farms acquire and feed it.

Making the Beef Farm Business Summary Work for You
Input costs remain high while beef prices are heading down.  Knowing how your farm is performing financially and learning how it compares to farms similar in size to yours is what the NY Beef Farm Business Summary is about.  Dr. Baker will share some results from NY and other States.

Southern Tier Beef Stocker Initiative
Dr. Baker will update the group on the Initiative including upcoming research, market tracking, and the Stocker Short course.

The cost is $10/person.  To register or for more information, call Kim Holden at 607-865-7090 or email at kmh19@cornell.edu or download the brochure: Delaware Beef Meeting.
