Right now the 2 collections are accessible as URL gateways. By mid- to late-September however, all of the individual e-books in both collections will be added to the Classic and WorldCat Catalogs.

1.) American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) backfiles, 1980s to present for 25 different ASME journals

2.) We have obtained a backfile package from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It includes:

AIAA Meeting Papers Archive, 1963-2009, including current papers

AIAA Journal Archive, 1963 to date

Journal of Guidance, Control and Dynamics archive, 1978 to date

3.) American Society for the Testing of Materials (ASTM) Standards and Digital Library. (This resource is presently available on a provisional basis on-campus and is being tweaked to work for off-campus users as well. Access can be considered to be in “beta” at the moment.) The ASTM Standards is a collection of 12,000 technical standards while the Library includes publications from a broad range of engineering disciplines, including aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, geological, health and safety, industrial, materials science, mechanical, nuclear, petroleum, soil science, and solar engineering.

 •           Sidewalk at the SW corner of Rockefeller Hall will be closed from May 10 to June 30.  This closes off the second door on the west side of the first floor of Rockefeller Hall. 

•           Class of 35 walk from East Avenue to Rockefeller Hall will be closed from May 10 to August 12.

•           Sidewalk on the east side of East Avenue from Class of 35 walk to the bus stop will be closed from June 1 to August 12.

•           Sidewalk on the east side of East Avenue from the bus stop to the existing crosswalk just north of the Physical Sciences Building project will be closed from June 14 to August 12.

 A new Clark Library website will be launching this morning.  The current site will be down for an hour or so during the transition.  After the new launch, the layout of the website will change quite a bit.  The new site is focused on library resources in the physical sciences.  It is organized by subject (astronomy, chemistry, physics) and by type of library resource (ejournals, ebooks, databases, etc.).  Clicking on the ejournals link under resources will lead to the ejournal title list that many use to find electronic journals.  Take a look and let me know what you think starting this afternoon:

The Clark Hall study space (former Physical Sciences Library) will be open M-F 9am – 5pm  next week over spring break.

The hallway outside the regular entrance will be closed off for the week.  Visitors to the study space can enter through the back entrance near the AEP office (212 Clark Hall).

A lot has happened in the library during the past month to transition the space and services.

Study Space

The former library space will be available for open quiet study starting next Monday January 25, 2010.  The space will be open most days M-Th 9am-10pm and F 9-5pm.  A mixture of tables, carrels, soft seating and group study rooms are available.

Library services
Onilne services are available through the Clark Library website, http://physicalsciences.library.cornell.edu.  To return books, place items on reserve or questions about your library account, please visit the Math Library in Malott Hall.  If you have former Physical Sciences Library books checked out and need to renew them, contact the Math Library: 255-5076, mathlib@cornell.edu.

Reserves

Reserves can be placed at any other Cornell Library. The Math Library has agreed to process course reserves that were previously housed at Physical Sciences Library.  Please contact Natalie Sheridan at the Math Library for assistance in processing reserves (254-3568, nas20@cornell.edu).

Welcome back after the Thanksgiving holiday. We are zeroing in on the final weeks of the semester and the final weeks of the Physical Sciences Library facility. Many facets of the library transition are coming together and I wanted to update you on a few exciting developments for the spring semester.

First, a quick update on the book moving: over 95% of the collection has now moved to other libraries: Engineering, Mann, Math and the Annex. The final move of the books will be completed this week, with the exception of Reserves and a few Reference items that will remain in Clark Hall through the study and exam periods. The book drop at PSL will remain open for returning books until noon on December 23, after this time please return books at any of the other libraries. If you need to renew books that you checked out from PSL, this will need to be done in person at any library circulation desk, you can NOT do this through your online account because the library management system is in the process of updating the locations of these books.

I am very happy to share with you the general plan in place for the library space through the spring semester. The open space will continue to be available for quiet study through the spring semester. The small rooms in the back hall will be available to sign out for group use. The librarians will be moving into the current reading room and will have office hours posted. These arrangements will be made over the January interim period, look for more specific information on these options as plans crystallize.

The Physical Sciences subject librarians will continue to be available to manage the electronic collections, assist you in finding the information you need, introducing new resources and advocating for support at the university level. I am also happy to report that the physics librarian position has been approved for re-hire and we are planning to post the position internally in January. The interview process will be coordinated by a committee and I will be in touch with the relevant departments to solicite membership for this committee.

The website upgrade continues behind the scenes. We are concentrating primarily on easier access to electronic books, journals and databases across a wide range of physical sciences sub-disciplines. We will want your input on the live prototype, calls for help test-driving will be forthcoming shortly.

I hope the semester is starting up well for all of you. It’s been a busy summer at the Clark Physical Sciences Library as we consolidate the physical collections and transition into a virtual library service, and I wanted to update you on our progress.

This process is being guided by a set of recommendations developed by a team of faculty, students and staff in the physical sciences last spring. The transition will continue through the fall semester and the library will remain open through December 18, 2009. Attached is an FAQ that addresses the future of the library collections and services.

Journals:
Our bound journal collection has been transferred to the Annex Library.
A recent bequest from Erna L. Gramse, a generous alumna who earned her master’s degree in chemistry from Cornell in 1933, has allowed us to purchase online access to back issues of almost 400 additional journal titles in the physical and related sciences. New print journal issues will be available in the Physical Sciences Library Reading Room through December, after which time most subscriptions will go e-only.

Books:
Books that have circulated since 2000 will be transferred to related collections in the Engineering, Mann and Mathematics libraries. These transfers will begin in late October and continue through early December. Books that have not circulated since 2000 were transferred to the Annex this month. Books on Reserve will remain in the Physical Sciences Library through the final exam period. Moving forward, we are exploring various ebook options such as the MyiLibrary patron-driven eBook plan, recently laid out in an e-mail to CU-Lib from Boaz Nadav-Manes. Books remain a key piece of the literature in the physical sciences, especially for students, and we are hoping to expand the opportunities for access through ebooks.

Reference Collection:
The Physical Sciences Library’s reference collection is one of the largest science reference collections in the Cornell system and is used by researchers across the disciplines. In addition to increased online journal holdings, we will be able to expand access through increased online reference resources with the Gramse and Clark Library endowments.
Remaining print reference materials will be transferred to the Engineering, Mann and Mathematics libraries.

Study space:
Maintaining quiet study space is a high priority for students in the physical sciences. This concern was reinforced at a recent meeting about future use of the library space with Vice Provost for Research Bob Buhrman, physical sciences department chairs and building representatives. The transition team submitted a proposal for supporting quiet study in this area.

Online presence:
The library Web site has migrated to a new platform and is now located at http://physicalsciences.library.cornell.edu/ . For now, this site is very similar to the previous one, and it will be in place through December 2009. Behind the scenes, we are developing an enhanced site based on the transition team’s recommendations and plan to launch it in January as the primary access point for library resources in the physical sciences. Our transition to a virtual library is closely linked to the new Web site, which will help people find electronic resources, relocated collections, and library services.

Finally, I’d like to collectively thank everyone across CUL who’s been involved in this extraordinary effort so far, and especially the PSL staff for their dedication to excellent service amid constant change.
All of this is in addition to the hundreds of students and faculty members who gave feedback and input last spring in forums, e-mail, petitions, departmental visits, and one-on-one conversations with library staff. This is uncharted territory for our library system, but I believe that all of the input from users, the transition team and library colleagues will make it successful and that we’re doing the best thing for our library. the primary access point for library resources in the physical sciences.
