Single Life at Cornell/Girls At Cornell January 29, 2009

Often times, when I am trying to implore some of my friends in high school to leave sunny California for the more ‘winter-friendly’ Cornell, interaction with girls is the #1 question always asked from guys considering Cornell. I don’t think this is because they don’t care about their education, I think it’s just a case that it’s easy to find out information about our academic program, but its hard to get an honest opinion of the social aspects because you will be spending half your time at Cornell interacting with other students and you want to make sure you are going to an environment you are comfortable with.

Girls at Cornell are definitely a different breed than most others. Because Cornell is situated in Ithaca, NY you have alot of raging hormones being released in this scenic collegetown. What makes Ithaca more appealing as a Los Angelino (I thinks that what we are called..) is the fact that whatever happens on campus stays on campus because  most of my on-campus friends are far, far away in New York which makes everything a little easier to get away with. I am not good with statistics, but Cornell boasts a 1:1 guys, girls ratio which is typical for most colleges. Most girls at Cornell are attractive, with about 10-15% being model material and begs the question why are they at Cornell, but thats another discussion for another time.

Being a minority male at Cornell who needless to say is attractive, I would say there is at least a 3:1 girls to guy ratio for minority students. Don’t get me wrong I have talked to girls outside of the realm of ‘minority’, but the large majority have been with minority women. Girls at Cornell are smart, intelligent, but typically don’t have much experience with guys because they were more focused on academics than being boy crazy. The same can be said about most guys at Cornell we are all smart, but most likely were nerds in high school and getting adjusted to the fact that more women are attracted to us now.

For guys, the first two years are generally exploration years for guys: they talk to alot of girls, bounce around relationships, until they are ready to settle down or have given up on the single life. Junior year you try to look for something meaningful on campus because this is the year of making decisions (what’s your major, what are you going to do for the rest of your life, blah..). Senior year you are left with two options: 1. Hope there is an attractive freshman and be that creepy senior who talks to freshman 2. Give up at Cornell and just wait until you graduate and experience the working world. You might be asking so like what are girls like at Cornell well like any true Cornellian I have pretty much broken it down to a concise science.

Serial dater- this girl is part of the talented 10% and is cute enough to bounce from relationship to relationship because guys are dumb and more than willing to take someone’s ex.

Asexual- meaning they are really focused/stressed on their studies and aren’t looking for a relationship right now (most engineers, some pre-med)

She can be a too shy Sally- girls who are looking for a man but are too innocent to really attract too many guys, giggles away at everything

Bitter- got in one too many bad relationships at Cornell so they pretty much give up on Cornell guys because she lumps all guys from Cornell in the same category: scum

Sexually frustrated- these are the girls who aren’t really looking for a full time relationship at Cornell, but are looking for a ‘friend’ to talk to. However for some reason they haven’t been able to capture one, so they become sexually frustrated and spend most of their time saying, “What’s wrong with me?”

Perfect Woman: as far as you are concerned this is your wife. You spend every waking moment together. Congrats! It’s a tough road, but people find it so it’s not impossible.

So pick your poison for you love life. We have girls at Cornell and we do party and have a social life like an 18-21 year old college student.

MLK Celebration and Obamamania! January 20, 2009

Another day, another opportunity to change the attitudes and the mistakes of the past, a chance to recognize the marks of the past and the potential of the future. Today was MLK day a celebration of his history and legacy, but also a moment to reflect on the achievements of today.

I was at the MLK parade in Los Angeles, an usual ritual when I am home with my dad. Today’s parade was like the fifteen or so I went to before it, but at the same time it was different. The people and groups walking in the parade were all the same, but their faces had changed. On hardened faces one would not consider friendly beamed signs of laughter, smiles, and hope.  It was that feeling of community my dad always described when he was growing up, but something I never experienced for myself. People smiling, saying hello, and striking conversation to complete strangers. While Obama might not be the complete savior we all imagined, one thing is for certain hope/faith is the evidence of things not seen, and while America might face problems you couldn’t tell that by the faces of the crowd.

$130 Dollars That Will Change My Life January 13, 2009

Today was a preview of how Shanghai will be. It was my trip to the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles as I submitted my Visa application, paid my 130 dollar fee, and waited for my visa to be processed as the final step of the study abroad process. It was weird being in a room full of Asians all speaking a different language other than English and I was standing out with my short sleeve polo and my Cornell sweats sagging with my basketball shorts underneath. It was then I felt completely ‘hood’ and heard Young Jeezy playing in the background of my mind simply because I always play his album when I want to feel thugged out in my car. While I am nervous about spending six months abroad in China of all places, I am excited to see a new strange land and experience a culture quite the opposite of my own. Either way I look at it, study abroad in China is going to be an adventure I am looking forward to. Plus in Shanghai it’s supposedly in the 60-70s a huge improvement from the 15 degree weather which is happening in Ithaca right now.

It Never Rains In Southern California January 3, 2009

Wow, this winter break is moving entirely too fast. The two main holidays have come and gone. Christmas came with the song Beat It playing in the background thanks to my Christmas gift of Guitar Hero. Nothing says the holidays like my mom singing off-beat to Beat It. I am still amazed she doesn’t know all the words to this classic song…Smh.

New Years came and gone not exactly starting with a bang, but definitely ending with one. It started with a double date to Benjamin Button, a film entirely too long for my 8 year old attention span. The girls weren’t much to look at, but I was able to share jokes and have a good time. After I returned home, I headed to a glow in the dark party.

After waiting 15 minutes for the gunfire to calm down in celebration of the New Year I headed out to a party my friends invited me too. This party aroused all of my senses: the sight of beautiful women in the multitude and the lights reflected outdoors in the midnight air, the smell of certain alcoholic drinks, sweat, and other items mixed in the wind, the sounds of the best music the West Coast had to offer, people talking or rapping their favorite lyrics. It really reminded me of my love for Southern California, how many people can say they were at an outdoor party @ 2 in the morning and having a good time. Only at the best place in the world… Southern California!
