I Just Want To Go Home December 20, 2008

This was a very repeated phrase as I waited for my finals to be over and head back to sunny, warm Los Angeles. Nothing makes you appreciate home more than having 12 hour study sessions in the Math library, taking two hour breaks in between watching the Office and 30 Rock, because as a Cornellian we love dry humor. By far a favorite of Cornell students is the Office, especially the character known as Andy Bernard who proudly boasts he is a Cornell grad and sang in an acappella group which is a staple of the Cornell experience.

A link to hearing Dwight talking about his interest for applying to Cornell.

Finals is definitely an interesting time, because this is a time you force yourself to learn the information you were supposed to learn over the course of the semester, but due to the fact you are a student you decide to crunch all of the information in a week. The thing is as soon a final or any significant test is over, one experiences a significant brain drain where all the information you had etched in your mind an hour ago disappears forever. If you honestly asked me questions from any of my finals I would get it wrong simply because I forgot and the only thought running in my mind is me laying in my bed watching ignorant television such as a Real Chane of Love, which is by the very entertaining television.

As I wait to board the plane with my fingers crossed about having no delays or cancellations, I am happy to get another semester completed with my hopes and my dreams still intact. I just want to go home…

I’m already exhausted and my attention span is close to 0. It’s only 9:00pm, but it feels like I have put together 5 all nighters back to back. Facebook has become not just my friend, but if it was legal it would probably become my wife. I have youtubed over a dozen different things, read 5 different blogs, and managed to sing and dance to 20 songs by myself. All that complete, I have about 5 minutes of studying in between. I just want to go quit school, and become a star in my performance of College Musical.

Finals Week Has Arrived December 8, 2008

The temperature is about 17 degrees, but feels like 7 which is the perfect weather to get all warm and cozy in the library and study, study, and study. Classes have officially ended, and yet this is the real crunch time for students as they prepare for their dreaded finals. This semester has decided to be extremely tough with me having five finals; none of my classes offered a final project or a final paper which I would much rather prefer over all of these final exams. The weird thing is during finals week there are so many activities to distract you from actually studying.

National Society of Black Engineers, Association of Students of Color, and Black Students United hosted a study jam from 1 to 4 with free food. Minority Industrial Labor Relations Student Organization hosted another study jam at 4pm with free food. Nigerian Student Association hosted free bowling from 7pm to 9pm at Helen Newman. Even at Robert Purcell Community Center they are offering free pool for students as means of de-stressing during finals. While all the study jams are great, I can’t attend because I am already aware of how these study jams end up. Me sitting and laughing for two/three hours having a good time eating and getting no work done. Instead, I am in Africana library studying taxation trying to wipe the droll off my face. Finals week….you have to love it, I guess.

With more libraries than I can think of, anyone can find a place to hide inside for the next two weeks!

1 Day Without Technology December 3, 2008

I understand as Generation Y we aren’t able to go five minutes without checking facebook, texting our friends during class, or reading my blog posts….hopefully. Today, I learned when I don’t have my Ipod Touch to check my email every hour or my phone to receive texts the world seems a little more isolated, but a little less tense.

My day started at 9:45 because since I couldn’t find my phone the night before, I forget to set my alarm for my 8:40am Business Law class. While I missed the last day of the class, I much appreciated the extra sleep.

After trying to search for 10 minutes, I gave up looking for my phone and proceeded to go to my work study job. It was within 10 minutes I realized I didn’t receive my usual morning texts and came to the conclusion I lost my phone. Needless to say, work seemed alot longer than usual.

6:00pm rolls around and I finally arrive in my room to finally find my phone. When I turn on my phone, the buzzing for new text messages and voice messages is relentless and I realize what I missed. I highlighted some texts for your viewing pleasure.

Text sent at 12:29pm Yo son! where you at?!?!?! Along with three of her missed phone calls

Text sent at 9:50am Isn’t that worksheet due today? (which I unfortunately forgot!) Followed by another text at 11:51 Where are you?!?

Text sent at 2:30am Do you have some superglue? What a random question to ask someone at 3 in the morning….

Along with four other missed calls and about 20 unanswered emails, either I am really popular or I have entirely too much on my plate to ever forget my cellphone for another day this semester.

Thanksgiving week was great this year! I gave myself an extended Thanksgiving break leaving Sunday afternoon rather than waiting until Wednesday afternoon when Cornell ‘officially’ lets us off. This was also a special occasion because instead of going home to Los Angeles, my mom and my grandmother decided to come and enjoy the great scenery of New York City.
Needless to say, my family overall impression of New York City was it was too crowded, too cold even though it was only like in the 40’s and had too many buildings. I can’t blame them, because I have the same feelings, but I wouldn’t mind living in other East Coast cities that have the city life and not as expensive. It was fun going sightseeing and remembering all the history the city has.
Being away from Cornell feels so liberating now. The hours of studying, taking prelims, walking up miles and miles of hills because I have no bus pass, and the cold weather have finally gotten to me. The junior year is definitely the hump year because classes are tough and I am involved in too many organizations. It’s ok though because after the week long break I am ready to get back into shape! With a belly full of turkey and catfish I feel ready to finish this semester out in the right way.
