When It’s Cold Outside November 23, 2008

Ithaca has maintained its reputation for having some of the coldest winters that starts in October and can end as late as May. It is urban legend that it snowed during one of the graduation ceremonies at Schoellkopf Field in mid-May. In other words, it is extremely cold and it never lets up. The cold outdoor weather has its advantages and disadvantages, which can make winter the best of times or the worst of times.

Disadvantages: 1) It’s cold….That is worse enough! 2) Nothing as torturing as climbing up the MVR hill covered in ice and snow where one is likely to take a spill 3) The erosion of any motivation I had to go to class; why go outside to the cold winter when I can review the presentation from the comfort and warmth of my room 4) The constant appearance of crocodile skin, because I always forget to put on lotion before I head to the great outdoors

Advantages: 1) Snowball fights/pranks- nothing makes you laugh more than seeing an unsuspecting victim get pelted in the face by the first snowball of winter. 2) Snowboarding with lunch trays from the dining halls down Libe Slope which is highly illegal and shouldn’t be attempted. 3) Supposedly because of the cold temperatures, people are more likely to stay within the confines of the dorms which leads to certain debauchery which may or may not be a good thing :)

Needless to say because I am from Southern California, I have a bias against cold weather and yearn for the opportunities in the sun.

When I see pictures like this, it just makes me sad and not wanting to go outside. This was early November, which is the part that scares me.

America’s First Black President November 5, 2008

“Lift every voice and sing till Earth and Heaven Ring…..Let us March On Till Victory IS WON!”
as I saw students holding each other arm in arm as they watched Barack Obama seal his victory.
As I heard the screaming and the yelling, I knew the moment had finally arrived: Barack Obama has been proudly selected as America’s 44th president. It was one thing to see the faces of people as they celebrated his victory, but to see the reaction of the Cornell black community will leave a lifelong impression on my mind. The smiles, the pride, and even the tears of many black students who watched as the results came up in the Ujamaa main lounge. It was honestly an eerie feeling. Here stood my generation, a generation of black students that have been given the most opportunities by far than any generation before us. Here stood America’s next doctors, lawyers, political leaders all celebrating an accomplishment that so many people fought, died, and struggled before. While I wasn’t screaming or yelling, I felt a joy and degree of pride that I have never felt before. I couldn’t help but reserve my reaction, because I couldn’t tell if it was real. Someone who looks just like me running the country. It feels so empowering as an African-American student to be able to see someone who looks just like me able to change America! If he can do that, surely I can graduate from Cornell. Needless to say, the black community of Cornell is celebrating and probably will continue to celebrate in a special way tomorrow in honor of this momentous occasion. Wow, I honestly had no idea when I would see the day. This is definitely a historic night, a night that will not only change the attitudes of many Cornellians, but that of America. CONGRATS!!!!

Here is our president :)
