Why Do Guys Have Nipples? September 30, 2008

These are the thought provoking, life changing questions asked to the upper echelon of students from Ivy League institutions such as Cornell. Well, maybe not so thought provoking or life changing, but it does make you think for a little bit ,right? That’s what happens in Biology 109 the non-major biology course because we are Applied Economics & Management students and not pre-med students trying to stay in school for another 15 years to earn the big bucks. Bio 109 is a real interesting course that takes all the facts of the major Biology but dumbs it down for the people who are more concerned about the Wall Street Journal than National Geographic. We still have labs, but ours are more of the kid friendly version. For instance, we took a field trip and walked to the gorges to categorize local life we see in the Gorges. It was basically us walking around saying that this was a bug and this was a plant, anything more complicated is a brain overload. Bio is a really relaxed class that fits really well in my life right now as I start my internship search and start hustling in this tough market. Hey you never know I might try to be a biological engineer the way the world is going…..probably not though.

Mortgage Crisis September 25, 2008

So I am sure everybody knows about the mortgage crisis and the whole financial crisis that is happening right now. Here at AEM, it is like the coming of the Armageddon for many students who received offers from Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and other institutions. It is legend that about 50% of AEM graduates go to investment banking, so lets do the math: 50% of AEM Students are interested in investment banking + 2 investment banks became messed up: Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers + 1 got bought up by Bank of America= 50% of students are thinking x2 about investment banking. AEM hosted a roundtable discussion with many Cornell alums who are top executives in the financial industry talk about the mortgage crisis. There were discussions about what caused the problem and how the future would look. The general consensus was everyone was to blame from rating agencies that didn’t provide adequate ratings to investors who didn’t examine how they received so much money from their emerging stocks. As far as the future goes, they spoke of heavy regulation of mortgage-backed securities. Sounds a little too much like socialism, but hey most of Europe isn’t doing too bad. The impression left for AEM students was be prepared and open for change in the near future!!! I know I will!

Went To Evisu To GAP September 18, 2008

It is starting to hit hard that I am a junior. A Freaking Junior!!!!!! I don’t know whether to be overjoyed or stressed out about that question that never stops being asked, “So Alex, what do you want to do with your life?” All I do is stare and then imagine myself in somewhere in Europe drinking wine and laughing because I am so rich I don’t need a job (Euros are the new currency for the wealthy!). I am really interested in corporate finance or accounting, because I like doing financing, making budgets, and having a job that pays well. With the current state of the economy, I am slightly concerned for an internship next summer, but no worries I am confident I deserve a great internship. The identity crisis only starts with my career life, it also trickles down to my personal life and even to the clothes I wear.

My relationship with my girlfriend ended abruptly and now I am back on the singles market. Being a single junior is really weird. It’s the awkward middle. You are too old to talk to first-semester freshman who you think are little kids even though you are only two years older and you can’t really talk to seniors because they are too busy getting drunk every night and worrying about what they will do after they graduate every day. In general, it’s a really awkward situation. Right now, I am not concerned I am just going to have some “me” time. I am pretty much on that bitter, weird Waiting To Exhale phase, you know where you don’t know if you want to key your ex’s car or just curl up in a ball. Oh well, I am honestly too busy to be worried about that. The worse part of my identity crisis is the realization that I am getting used to part of the “corporate culture”.

Someone walked up to me and basically said you look really prep. I was wearing basically an outfit by Gap complete with fitted button up shirt and jeans. At that point I realized I am completely different than how I entered. Before I would always be fitted with LRG and Evisu Jeans, now I am wearing sweaters, polos, and khakis. How the Tables Turn. I guess it comes with time. I feel so freaking old!

I AM JUST WAITING TO EXHALE!!!!!

Sometimes as a Cornell student you get so caught up in the day to day life you fail to appreciate the opportunities that today and the future have in store. Too often do we as students focus on the next prelim, the next party, or the next event with free food. This afternoon I was fortunate enough to say a former goodbye to a friend Douglas Lowe whose time on campus was cut short because of an accident at the gorges. As I sat and thought about what I accomplished at Cornell, I thought about the legacy I would leave behind. I hope it is one that shows balance: balance between achieving my short and long terms goals, balance between enjoying my life and being a full time student, and just an overall mellow temperate. I don’t mean to get all philosophical or start discussing what happens beyond death, all I can think of is what am I doing to leave an defined mark on Cornell. There was something someone said about Douglas that really impacted me, Fear Nothing. Something so simple, and yet hard to achieve. As I walk through Cornell campus, I now walk a little bit more confidence and swagger, because in the words of Douglas I have nothing to fear.

Dragonball Z September 8, 2008

Do you remember the days as a kid, waking up to watch an episode of Dragonball Z and seeing Goku making energy balls? I thought it wasn’t possible to make those energy balls until I started my first class of my P.E. Tai Chi. We spent the morning closing our eyes, relaxing our muscles, and making energy balls. I know this sounds really insane, but when I actually begain to listen to seefu Rex ( I guess seafu means teacher) I could feel the power surge into my hands. It almost felt like two magnets pulling away from each other. Tai Chi is this ancient martial art which is focused on meditation and smooth movements. I decided to take the class because I had alot of free time and wanted to take a class that was relaxing and would listen up my joints. I am actually excited to see what we will be doing as the semester goes on and if I will eventually become like Goku with my hair turning yellow and creating massive energy balls I will use to save humanity. Ok, I am having enough flashbacks of Dragonball Z, so I will just keep practing it by myself when no one is looking to try to become like Goku.

Labor Day September 1, 2008

The first day of the first entire week of school, I already feel exhausted from my classes. While for most today is the day where those working folks take a day to relax and reflect on the upcoming fall and winter, Cornell students are left hiking up hills and sitting in lectures because Cornellians know no such holiday. What I always found confusing with no time off for Labor Day at Cornell is, here we have the Industrial & Labor Relations School, a school that fights to uphold the sanctity of Labor Day and yet I can’t get one extra day out of the school year. It’s fine at least I have one day done, only like 300 left until I can party it up like a senior!
