Regular Decision FAQ 2017-18

When is the Regular Decision deadline?

The regular decision deadline is January 2, 2018, at midnight EST.

What are the application requirements?

First-year applicants should check out the First-Year Application Checklist for detailed information about Cornell’s admission requirements. To learn more about the college-specific additional requirements, please see the Freshman Admission Requirements Chart as well.

Will my application be disqualified if some of my supporting documents arrive after the deadline?

Your online Common Application (CA) or Universal College Application (UCA), the application fee (or fee waiver), and the Cornell-specific Writing Supplement (CA) or Supplement (UCA) must be submitted by the published deadline. Supporting documents such as your transcript(s), the School Report, and teacher recommendations, must follow shortly thereafter. Please note that your application will not be considered complete until these required documents are on file. In addition, the Mid-Term Report should be submitted as soon as it is available in order to complete the application review process.

How do I apply using a fee waiver?

Detailed information on fee waiver eligibility, and the filing process, can be found on our Admissions Requirements webpage, under “Application Fee” (item #8).

How do I send an official transcript for college-level coursework I have taken?

The college/university registrar should send your eTranscript to: undergradapp@cornell.edu.

How do I schedule an interview?

Interviews are only required for applicants wishing to major in Architecture, and are optional for both Fine Arts majors, as well as, for applicants to the SC Johnson School of Hotel Administration. Detailed information can be found on our Admissions Requirements webpage under “Interviews” (item #9).

Does Cornell accept supplemental materials and forms?

Applicants are welcome to submit supplemental materials which provide additional information not already contained in their application. Please visit our Submit Supplements webpage for details on how to have documents added to your application file.

To submit a supplemental musical recording for evaluation by Cornell’s Music Department, please follow the directions listed on our Submit Recordings webpage.

Cornell will not accept supplemental materials after February 15 and does not accept the Common Application or Universal College Application Arts or Athletic supplemental forms.

Is it okay to send an additional letter of recommendation?

Applicants are permitted to include one or two additional recommendation letters in their application file, but should understand that the quality of content is far more important than the quantity of letters. Additional letters must include the applicant’s full name and date of birth and be sent directly from the recommender using one of the methods described on the Cornell Admissions website.

I am an international student. Do I apply using the freshman or international application?

The application process and requirements are the same for all students applying to Cornell University. International applicants should read the International Students section of the admissions website prior to completing their application for detailed instructions and information.

I am an international student. Do I need to provide a TOEFL score to be considered for admission?

International* students for whom English is not their first language are required** to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. The recommended minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores are as follows:

TOEFL: 100 (Internet‐based Exam)

IELTS: 7

*International refers to applicants who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

**The TOEFL and/or IELTS requirement is waived for students who have achieved a score of 670 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT, or for students who have studied at least 4 years in the United States or other nations where English is an official language. To request a TOEFL waiver, please visit our TOEFL Waiver webpage.

How do I know if my application is complete?

You can check the status of your application via your online Application Status Account. If you need your Applicant ID and activation code resent, please go to our Application ID Lookup webpage. Please note that you must use the same email address that is listed on your application.

Why aren’t all of my application materials appearing in my application status account?

We are in the midst of processing a large number of applications, each of which includes multiple pages of supporting documentation. We ask that you continue to monitor your online Application Status Account. If we are missing any required materials in mid-February, we will contact you directly via the email address that you have included in your application.

Did Cornell receive my teacher recommendations?

Cornell receives more than 75,000 teacher recommendations each year. Due to this volume, we are unable to answer questions about specific recommendation letters. If a letter(s) is not showing in your online Application Status Account, please confirm with your recommender to make sure it has been sent to Cornell.  Please note that it may take up to two weeks for an applicant’s status account to reflect recently submitted materials.

How do I apply for financial aid?

Please see the Cornell Financial Aid website for detailed information including eligibility, application information, and deadlines.
