CU Domain Additional Information
Additional information about the CALS migration to the Cornell University Windows domain:
For about 10 years IT staff in CALS have managed a College-wide “domain” for Windows workstations as well as some Macintosh computers. The CALS domain, known as “Calsnet”, is entirely separate from all central University services, and represents a significant cost to CALS. Over the last year Cornell has been building a University-wide domain, and CIT has offered senior CALS IT staff an unprecedented amount of input and influence in the design and implementation of this new service in order to ensure that it would meet our needs. We are confident that this new service will allow us to save on the overhead of managing our own domain system while at the same time offer us some new and compelling opportunities.
We would like to emphasize that while this is a significant change from an IT perspective, the transition is anticipated to be a very low impact one for end-users. In partnership with CIT’s new dedicated migration teams, your IT staff will be carrying out testing through the fall, and the bulk of the migration to the new domain is expected to occur in the early part of 2012. Over a dozen other units at Cornell have also signed on for migration through the first half of 2012, so we are, by no means, alone in our endeavor.
Any questions should be directed to your local IT support teams.

Dear CALS Community,
Beginning in November, CALS will be engaging in a college-wide migration for computers running Windows, from our college-managed Windows domain to the new Cornell domain (a “domain” is what enables people to log in on different computers across the College, access file shares, printers, etc.) This project is expected to be completed by the end of February. Over the next few months you will be receiving communications from your local IT support teams which will provide greater detail and scheduling. We anticipate that this migration will have very little impact on end users and that there will be minimal disruption.
This initiative is part of the University’s administrative streamlining project, and represents a significant cost savings to CALS while offering us new opportunities in the areas of ease of use and access to a growing suite of central services.
IT managers are well informed of progress toward our migration goals and are working very hard to make sure this process is as smooth and uneventful for you as possible. Please contact your local IT manager with any questions. Further details about this project are found in the attached document.
Thank you,
–Dan Elswit
